In 1996, Flash/Polestar Racing, a partner of Volvo Cars, founded the Swedish automaker Polestar. In 2015, Volvo purchased Polestar, which it had previously purchased from Geely in 2010. With manufacturing taking place in China, it has its headquarters in Torslanda, a town outside of Gothenburg, Sweden.
The STCC Polestar racing team gave rise to Polestar Performance AB, which was later purchased by Volvo Cars in July 2015, and that company’s name is where the Polestar brand originated. While retaining close ties to Volvo, the racing team’s name was changed to Cyan Racing.
A business combination deal between Polestar and Gores Guggenheim, Inc., a company that specialises in acquisitions, will allow Polestar to go public, the company announced in September 2021. On 24 June 2022, shares of Polestar began selling on the Nasdaq exchange under the symbol PSNY.
